Education Is A Life

This weekend Rebekah finishes her home schooling career. She is an independent, inquisitive, smart and beautiful girl.

We started this journey thinking “How can we possibly mess up K4?”  Then, the next step was to instill a love of books and learning. Then, to give her access to as many good resources as we could afford.

Now this leg of the journey is done.I have mixed emotions. I am ecstatic. I feel a sense of accomplishment, that we did this home schooling thing for 12 years. But, I also know that there is so much more to learn.

I am  thankful for the time we had together. The beautiful days, the days of studying out doors, packing up a picnic, books and our watercolors and heading outside. Thankful for loooong times of reading, playing the piano and violin, baking and crafts. Thankful for beach days when others were in school.  I loved watching BBC movies with Bek, and staying up until 1 am so we could watch all the episodes. Days when we had had enough and packed it up and headed to the library.

We had enough time to build a relationship.

This whole thing has been an education.

Bek, I am so proud of you! You have taught me so much!

***addendum: Here is Rebekah’s response from Facebook. 🙂

“Aw, thanks mom! I love you!  I have a lot to be thankful for. For twelve years I got to be at the place I loved most–home. I loved having hot chocolate school mornings in my feety pajamas, and I loved reading out loud to you on the couch. I loved getting up early and getting all my stuff done before the rest of the world woke up (although I didn’t do it ALL that often…) I loved playing Blokus and Monopoly late at night (on those rare occasions when the other kids were all in bed) and of COURSE watching BBC Movies with you (BLEAK HOUSE!). I loved hearing you read to us from Elizabeth George books I loved racing you to memorize verses. This year will be very different, but I’m not scared. You’ve always challenged me to do bigger and better things, and I know that this is part of life. I’m looking forward to my graduation and to my final summer at home. Love you! ♥ “

Now you see why I love her so!

  • Home teaching offers just as you say, “enough time to build a relationship.”
It is affirming to read how important these unhurried mother-daughter times were to you. What a lovely life you shared together.

  • I am laughing as I read this post I wrote and realized that I never really talked about academics. We really did study sometimes!! 🙂

  • I’m so happy for you and your daughter. And as a parent wrapping up Homeschooling Year 1, I appreciate the encouragement! (Though I’m getting a little weepy over your description of the time you had together!)

    Congrats to you both!

  • Your words brought tears to my eyes, Sarah. Bek is one of hte most talented, yet humble young ladies I know. She is kind and loving and funny and beautiful both inside and out. I feel blessed to have watched her grow into the godly young lady that she is. You and Peter have done your parenting job well.
