My First Stitch Fix Order

Can I tell you how weird this feels? To be posting pictures of myself in different clothes. But, my Stitch Fix order came in and I promised I’d show you what they sent.

If you’ve never heard of Stitch Fix, in a nutshell, it’s a personal shopper that sends you clothes when you want them to. I wrote in more detail about  Stitch Fix here.  You can sign up here to try the service for yourself.

So here’s what they sent me:

Clearly, from the pictures, I should have at least checked my hair and thrown on a touch of lip stick before I photographed, but live and learn, right?

Here’s what I thought about the pieces.

1. Loved it. Would have never chosen Dolman sleeves for myself, but I liked it. I’ll pair it with solid red or grass green scarf around my neck, don some white capris and I’ll be good to go out to lunch. I kept it.

2. This black shirt made me feel like I was pregnant all over again. Not a good look for me. Sent it back.

3. I really liked the cut of this blazer, although the arms were short on me. But the color and material seemed really old-ladyish to me. Just not my fabric. Sent it back.

4. I loved these earrings! I just couldn’t bring myself to spend $38 on them. (although that is the going rate for this brand around the web.) Sent it back, although would have loved to keep them.

5. This black striped dress. Cute concept. Very versatile. You could pair it with a red belt or a little jacket, but oh, how horrible it looked on. I don’t know why anyone thinks elastic waist is ever a good idea. If you are a size 4 then maybe you can get away with it, but…um, no. SO BAD. Sent it back.

What I love about Stitch Fix:

I don’t have to go shopping and can try on clothes at home.

I hate shopping for clothes and I rarely try things on in a store dressing room. I’ll buy it, take it home and try it on and then return it if needs be. I don’t hate all shopping. I love shopping for kids clothes, and if you just had a baby…oooh, do I love shopping for that baby!! I love buying art, housewares and dishes. I just hate buying clothes. My sisters forced me to try on about 20 pairs of jeans one December until we found just the “right” fit and I still have nightmares about that horrid trip. Perhaps that is why I always buy accessories. Hmm.

I loved their style survey, although I didn’t get it right the first time. After my first order, I went back and altered my style survey. Not only have I lost weight since I first filled the form out, I think I’ve better nailed down my style. I also was more specific about my price range. I made a style board on Pinterest that I can refer my personal stylist to, so she can see pictures of what I like. I like classic things. Yes, I want an update. But NO, I don’t want to look fringe.

I love that you can specify MODEST clothes. This was one of my main concerns. I won’t wear anything too low, too short or too tight. That eliminates many fashions for me. I prefer my skirts and shorts to brush the top of my knee. “Your clothes should be tight enough to show you’re a woman but loose enough to show you’re a lady.” I was glad that there were modesty options on the survey.

I love that they analyze your body shape and sent me things that I would have NEVER picked for myself. Sometimes older women look even older because they never venture out of the styles they wore in their 20’s. Whether they like it or not, they end up looking frumpy. Outdated hair, clothes and cuts. That screams “out of touch” to me. The women I admire most look classy, current and appropriate…not to mention that I am sure their husband appreciates it as well! 🙂

Free shipping. That was nice and felt a little less “risky” knowing it was free.

What I disliked:

I was surprised to learn that the $20 styling fee, which goes toward the purchase of your clothing if you like something — is forfeited if you don’t like anything in the box.

Three days to return it. I was surprised that you had only three days to get those clothes back into the mail. I scheduled the box to come Feb. 12th, but received it a day earlier, I think. Due to the storm, I didn’t even know it had arrived. So, that was a very short window of time during a crazy week to get those things returned. I think a week would have been more customer friendly.

Some of the items were expensive. Again, that was my fault. They have several price ranges…and I somehow missed the fact that they have a “cheaper the better” option. They sent me $38 earrings. For me, that is just too much. I commented about that in my notes back to my stylist and I’m sure that she’ll send me something in my price range next time.

I love that the author uses Kate Middleton as a classic example. (not from a Christian worldview, but still great material. IS there a current Christian book on style out there? Hmm. Exactly.)

So there you have it. My experience with Stitch Fix. My advice if you use this fun service: be prepared to be specific. 🙂 For a person who is not detail oriented, this was a little stressful for me, but I did it and think the next “fix” will be even better.
