A Normal Homeschooling Magazine!
A few days ago, I was with my friend at our home schooling co-op and I mentioned to her that I had never found a home schooling magazine that I really loved. I went down the laundry list of things that turned me off with other homeschooling magazines. It seems as thought the movement had been hijacked by “stands” that I found…well, just plain weird!
{I am not really sure how I ended up home schooling. I began this journey when Rebekah was young and I just kinda found myself a here. 🙂 Then, when I entered the world of blog land, I realized that I was kinda an “odd ball.” I am not really attached to any movement, I am just a home schooler who is also a believer in Jesus Christ. You see, I do not believe that home schooling is the ONLY way to educate a child. In fact, if I could afford it, I think there are many schools that could do a better job than I have. I believe that a loving, inspiring environment and an interested child are the prime conditions for learning. I also do not grind wheat to make my own bread. I don’t buy organic- we are just plain thankful for food to eat! We don’t believe it is mandatory to wear a head coverings, have as many children as we can, have our kids sit with us in church, nor do we shun all youth programs. I only make my own cleaning supplies out of necessity–not because I want to!}
I just came to the conclusion that the homeschooling magazines out there are not a good match for our family. They looked like they had been made on some home computer. And it bothered me to see straggly haired kids in the photographs. Okay, it also bothered me when the photographs of making your own handmade cleaning chemicals showed them being mixed in dingy old tupperware with a mess of a house in the background–dirty dishes and clutter just do not inspire me.
Anyways, enough of what I didn’t like.
My friend brought me over “Home Educating Family.” Have you seen it? here (When you get to the website, you can sign up to get a free digital subscription for one week. They don’t have the issue that I have pictured available, which is a crying shame because there are two excellent articles in this edition. )
It is a balanced, Christian publication. I was so happy! The kids were clean and neat. The photos were crisp and professional. But more importantly, the articles were so grace filled and balanced. I mean, really excellent articles that applied to all Christians– not just homeschoolers.
So there you have it. I am subscribing to the Home Educating Family, and am happy to have found them!
Again Sarah, You amaze me, you are such a wonderfully well rounded Christian Wife, Mother, Teacher, and Leader. Your wisdom reflects every area of your life. And your ability to help and encourage everyone around you is a gift from the Lord. God Bless You…
OH, you mean, you don’t sew matching dresses for you and your girls either?! 😉 Just kidding.
Blessings,
Barb

P.S. I have a grinder and have ground my own wheat. 🙂
Anne, sign up for the free one week online version so you can check it out for yourself. I think you’ll like it…we tend to have similar tastes, I think.
I don’t subscribe to any homeschooling magazines because they are so. not. normal! I’m definitely going to check this one out, thanks!
Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll have to check them out!
It’s nice to have this resource…you’re right–there are so many weird homeschoolers out there! Just because you don’t want your kids in the public school doesn’t mean you have to be a homesteader! I appreciate your balanced approach.
