Six Quick Ways To Cozy Up Your Home
Last week I mentioned that I was going to write a few posts on making your home cozy. I asked my sister Beth to contribute, because she is the crafting queen of the family and both she and my mom have an incredible knack for adding cozy touches to your home. She just seems to “see” some wonderful potential in old things, like say for instance, an old milk jug. So she’ll whip it out of the trash, fill it with flowers and viola! She has a farmhouse/vintage-y centerpiece. She’ll be sharing later on.

But for now, here are six quick ways to cozy up your home.
1. Add comfort to your relaxing space.
Place throw blankets, pillows and extra lighting in the areas you notice that your family tends to “flop” down to read. This encourages them to sit, get comfortable and stay a while.
2. Open your window for fresh air.
In Victorian times, women took note of the air in their homes because they believed that stale air could make you sick. They were fond of taking long walks to enjoy the fresh air and also of airing out your home first thing in the morning. I try to open as many windows as possible, weather permitting.
3. The Smell Check.
When the windows are closed, take note of the smell of your home. Each home has it’s own smell. Is it pleasant when you come inside from out doors? Correct whatever is causing unpleasant odors- perhaps a litter box, running shoes, rubbish containers that need to be emptied, or smelly sinks. There are many fragrant room sprays that you can buy or you can light a candle. I personally love the Yankee Candle collection for their bakery scents.
4. Mood lighting.
Candles add a calming, peaceful effect to your home. The sight of fire tends to be homey feeling. We have two fireplaces in our home and I light them as much as possible. In the summertime, I know many people use multiple candles in the fireplace to replicate that warm glow.
5. Display the things you love.
It could be art, books, collections of buttons in various jars, quilts or whatever. Encourage your kids to make their own art and display it in your home. We have Hope’s first acrylic painting of flowers hanging in our front room, and different oil paintings that the kids have done over the years scattered throughout our room.
6. Bring flowers inside as much as possible.
The old chinese proverb says “When you have only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a lily with the other. ” If your budget allows, why not buy a bundle of flowers at the grocery store and then add to it from your own yard’s bounty?
Your turn! What are other ways you like to cozy up your home? Where do you get your ideas?

Ahhh… I like that Chinese proverb! Beauty is important, every day.
I like to add white twinkle lights to indoor trees & use dimmer switches as often as possible. Not just at the holidays, LOL.
Also like to have something baked in the afternoon most every day of the week, not only for the frangrance but so family members and friends wo arrive at the end of the work or school day always have something refreshing. (Include with this fresh iced tea every day.)
I sure do like those white hydrangeas, very pretty… Great article!

Marie, I Love using indoor twinkle lights! I used to dip my twinkle lights in silicone to make them look like candle light. Now they sell those in the stores.
Your flowers are beautiful! I like to add flowers too, candles and books..anything simple and related to nature..i like to keep the lighting dimmed too~ thank you for the tips!
Wonderful post! I’m really big on having candles. I find that the look and the smell of candles really makes a home more cozy. I also agree with bringing flowers indoors, and I try to add cozy blankets to the areas we relax in! Thanks for sharing this list.

It’s amazing how something simple, just bringing in a few flowers or lighting a candle can change the whole feeling of a room. (When I do it, it inspires me to keep things clean!)
