A Home Full of Laughter
Peter recently taught our youth group that one of Satan’s lies is that “holiness brings misery, ” and he specifically talked about “those” people who nobody wants to be like, because they are just joyless, stonefaced grumps. This is NOT holiness.
Well, the kids all seemed to know exactly what he was talking about.
Christians of all people should be that happiest people around.
Our home is noisy, full of laughter and giggles–and we love to have a lot of fun.
Peter especially keeps the atmosphere of our home fun with his dry sense of humor. He has always made me laugh. He cracks me up, actually. It is not uncommon for him to be playing board games with the kids after supper, or for the noise level to escalate into high pitched (LOUD) squeals as he chases the kids through the house.{LOVE HIM!}
I want the atmosphere of our home to be welcoming and pleasant. Dare I say, Joy-filled? he,he. I want for my kids and their friends to LOVE being here. Things like music, laughter, snacks and planned craziness are all ways to accomplish that goal.
I know people who grew up in silent, somber, serious–joyless homes. And today, they are just like their parents. And joylessness is not something I want to pass on to my future grandchildren.
Edith Schaeffer said of passing things down through generations,
“What are your choices? Whom are your choices for? Not just for yourself. Chose now whom you will serve, and that choice is going to affect the next generation, and the next generation, and the next. Choice never affects just one person alone. It goes on and on and the effect goes out into geography and history. You are part of history and your choices become part of history.”
And I would add, choose now the atmosphere of your home, because your choice will affect future generations.
If you smiled, would your face crack? 😉
Do you joke with your kids? How do you plan for family fun with your kids?

Oh your home sounds just like ours. My husband and I decided long ago that we would be the house the kids all hung at. Mostly we wanted to know the influences in the home were us and our values and also we wanted to get to know the character of the kids they were with. It isn’t always easy as I have to cook for extra guests on a moment’s notice and sometimes I just crave my jammies but I still would never change how we do things. We have kids 20-3 so we will be sharing our home forever it seems.
Sounds like a lovely place to be, Elaine!
Wow! Thank you! As a mother of 8 children, sometimes, the day-to-day “stuff” gets me so busy, I “forget” to be joyful. Yet, I want, more than anything, for my home to be filled with love, laughter, and my children with their friends, sharing the joy and love of the Lord. Thank you for the reminder!
Such a great point, Sarah! Thank you for the reminder. 🙂
Wonderful post!! Great reminder… Oh the blessing of a truly JOY-filled home!
I was just thinking today how loud our home is most of the time… and how I like it {when it is appropiate of course}. I know some who would frown upon it probably, but I know that it is just all of us loving life, eachother, and God together… wonderful.
JOYfully in Him,
Kelli
Oh, Sarah… I needed this! I struggle with this. I am determined, by the grace of God, to pass the virtue of JOY on to my children. God gave me a wonderful, joyful husband to teach me to embrace laughter.
Thank you, my friend!
