How to Holiday-Proof Your Mind and Heart

God’s Word warns us not to love the world or the things of the world, yet I find that during the Christmas season, it is hardest for me to not become entrapped by the worlds philosophy and focus (worldliness).

It is tempting to allow my focus to turn to twinkling lights and merry music and fun gifts to the exclusion of my Savior.

I am also aware that when my desire for earthly things increases, my desire for the spiritual decreases.

And then there is the temptation to do things for Him rather than allow Him to do something in our hearts.

Do you believe that Satan would use even the celebration of the birth of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords to try to get an edge/foothold  in your life? I do. I believe Satan uses good, religious and moral things–anything he can–to stop us from pursuing the One that matters. He doesn’t care how religious you are or what religion you are,  as long as he can deter you from KNOWING Christ.

How do we safeguard ourselves from exalting meaningless things? I know it sounds simplistic, but start by being in God’s Word.

When you read God’s word and meditate on it, acknowledging that He is the Creator and we are the created, we are in a better mindset—>a sane mindset<—to ascribe Him the worth that He is due.

If Jesus is your Lord and Savior, He deserves to rule your life and rein on the throne of your heart. He deserves your first affection!

“Do you want to be safe from the influence, ways, and lusts of the world and the flesh (I John 2:16)? From the sins which so easily entangles us (Hebrews 12:1)? Then delight in yourself in the Lord, in His provision, in His Word. Faithfully feed on the things that possess true substance and real meaning. When you remember that “all Scripture is given by inspiration by God and is profitable” (2 Timothy 3:16) and partake of such divine substance, then you are fed, you are led and you are safe!”

Elizabeth George
