Friday Five
Yay! It’s the weekend. Tonight we are going out to eat and then into Symphony Hall! I have been thinking about what to wear all morning. Getting dressed to go to the Symphony is not what it used to be, so I will probably wear something black and dressy, but I’ll skip the sequins. (jk-if you know me, you know that I never wear anything too glitzy anyway. LL Bean suits me just fine. :))
I thought it would be fun to try something new on Fridays. I will call it the Friday Five. 🙂 I know, you are stunned and awed by my originality. So, once you regain your composure, read on and I will answer five questions:
What I’m:
1. Learning: I’m learning to make healthier eating choices. I recently went through the book “Love to Eat, Hate to Eat” with a friend and was forced to answer some questions about my own eating habits. I posted the questions here and think they are helpful to determine if your eating patterns show dependence on God, or reveal a life of independence and self-pleasing.
My friend, Niki, is the nutritional ninja. She seems to know all things “healthy” and has graciously fielded my ridiculous questions. Well, although I know that I am slow to jump on the smoothie bandwagon, she taught me to make her smoothies this week. I’ve made blueberry and strawberry so far and enjoyed them both.
She shared her recipe:
1 cup frozen fruit
1/2 cup yogurt (Stoneyfield or “So Delicious” Dairy Free Yogurt)
3/4 cup. juice (I used OJ)

My blender broke a few months back so I made these in a food processor. Take my advice:  if you are doing this in the processor, blend the fruit and yogurt first and then add the juice–otherwise the juice runs all out of the blender, down your cabinets and floors and it takes you a half hour to get rid of the sticky messy residue. Just saying. 🙂
2. Thinking: I have had several “big thoughts” this week, believe it or not. 🙂 The first one is a One Question Sentence for Moms.Â
The second is the phrase “Assume Positive Intent.” We are always very quick to assume we know why others do what they do, and in most cases our judgements are fallible, because we are not all knowing.  People who assume positive intent have a stronger, more intimate relationship with their spouse, and have an easier time entering into friendships with other women. You cannot  assume the worst about someone and be their friend. (1 Cor. 13) And uncharitable/unloving judgements are sinful.
3. Reading: A Woman’s Wisdom by Lydia Brownback. This book just came out and has already been a huge blessing to me and the kids. I have been reading portions of it aloud to them for the past week in our morning devotions. Lydia has graciously agreed to be part of a guest post in the next few weeks and we’ll be giving away a free copy of her book. Stay tuned!
4. Memorizing: Ephesians 4. Â If you have not read the book His Word in My Heart by Janet Pope, it is an excellent resource for learning to memorize scripture. Also, if you u se BibleGateway.com, you can not only read your verses every day, but they have an audio option that you can click and hear your passage while you are washing dishes or folding laundry.
5: Planning:Â For Rebekah to come home in 7 days! We have a lot to do to pack for her missions trip in the two short weeks that she is home. She wants to go to the beach on the Cape while she is home. So, I am planning meals, outings, and special family times.
Also, we are getting ready to re-shingle our home, and are planning out our flower beds. This weekend we are going to plant lilac bushes on the side of our lawn. 🙂
How about you? What are you reading, learning, doing? Please feel free to tell us in the comments, or link to your blog post about what you are up to. And if you have a great smoothie recipe, PLEASE post the link! 🙂
Have a great weekend!
Also just remembered another blog I found a month or so ago that included healthy snack ideas…here’s the link if you’re interested:

Some recipes call for ingredients that may be hard to find or online orders only but I substitute when I can to try to get it as healthy as possible 🙂 and I know adding oats, whole wheat flour and honey are easy healthy steps I’m trying with my homemade baked goods!
That book from Lydia Brownback sounds great! I love the book of Proverbs!
I hear ya on the healthy living…I’m trying too! Here’s a link to a recipe I tried this week that is actually really good for healthy baking: http://fanciedfreedom.wordpress.com/2012/04/27/food-on-friday-heart-healthy-raisin-oat-bran-muffins/
Muffins are such a great fast food that can be made healthy in so many ways. Thanks for your blog posts! 🙂
Right now I’m reading The Blessings of Obedience by Andrew Murray…great little book! I’m actually reading it with/to my children every morning (I keep a section ahead of them!) and having them copy a quote or verse from it in their composition books. It might take us a year to get through it, but that much time spent on the subject of obedience is well worth it!
As for smoothies, I make them often with whatever fruit, yogurt, or juice I happen to have and they’re always good! Freezing the strawberries and/or bananas first makes them nice and frosty, too.
