Some Great Weekend Reads
I hope you have a great weekend! I will be on a week long blogging break this coming week, soooo, for your reading enjoyment, I’ll share some articles that were of interest to me this past week.
1. I recently received a free copy of Radical by David Platt. I read it in a weekend and to be honest, it left me feeling uneasy and deflated. My concern is that it elevated extremes and “location” of ministry rather than elevating being all there wherever you are. And this is not an inspiring message for mothers at home.
And although Mr. Platt says that you don’t have to travel to third world countries to minister well, that very approach is promoted heavily in the book. So, what’s a young mother to do? Pack up her brood and head to Ethiopia? No. She is to serve the Lord wherever she lives. Not everything has to be extreme or radical in order to be right. In fact, I find that when you do the right thing in little things, then the rest falls into place. The Holy Spirit has worked through little acts for centuries. That is why I appreciated this article: We Need Boring Christians. My father was a “boring Christian.” He is a cranberry farmer with a very even keel temperament, but his financial support has been the backbone for one of the biggest ministries in India. He would not be happy if he knew I was writing this, because, you see, he actually believes that in the end it is God who has to know and not the whole world. {It’s that don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing principle.}
2. This article on modesty entitled What Not To Wear by Girls Gone Wise. Modesty is bristled at by most women as some outdated notion. But because our God values and commands it, we must embrace it wholeheartedly. Great insight for women of all ages!
3. Do you flirt with your husband on Facebook? I don’t because I am not a huge fan of outward displays of affection. ha,ha. But seriously, this article Facebook, Privacy and Marital Oneness makes the case that to do so is to diminish our intimacy, and I agree.
4. We all want to be wise women, so I enjoyed this article by Lydia Brownback entitled Who’s A Fool.
5. And last but not least, have you heard of the LYTRO?? It is a total redesign of the digital camera! We were fascinated it!
What did you think of the articles? Agree? Disagree? Feel free to discuss in the comments! Have a great weekend!

I’ve also read Radical and came away feeling a bit discouraged since my heart desires to do more globally (even locally at times) to help others and share the Gospel, but this season of motherhood doesn’t allow for too much of that. My discouragement didn’t last too long though after reading some of Elisabeth Elliot’s messages on motherhood and finding glory in the mundane things. Although it is easy to see how this job of motherhood on some days isn’t very radical! 🙂 Thanks for the article in Relevant Magazine!
Thanks for posting those articles. I was really encouraged by the first one, Why we need boring Christians. Have a great weekend.
